FAQ

HOW DO YOU APPROACH CONVERSATIONS BETWEEN CHARACTERS?

I’m always trying to be inside the minds of all the characters at once. I’m trying to understand what each of them is trying to get or achieve within a scene. Most interactions in any book, movie, TV show, are all about some sort of negotiation. So I’m looking to see what one person wants from the other person, and what the obstacles are between each character getting what they want. It creates tension within the scene which makes it exciting.

HOW DO YOU COME UP WITH DIFFERENT CHARACTER VOICES?

Before I begin narrating I pre-read the book and then actually cast each character using all my favorite actors. I have lists of all of my favorite leading men, older men, character actors, funny women, funny men etc. I then have a specific actor in mind when I’m reading their dialogue. It doesn’t necessarily mean that the voice will be recognizable as that actor (I wouldn’t call myself a great impersonator) but the personality behind the voice changes, and that usually makes each person sound different. I use different sound placement and pitch and accents, but I think the essence behind doing characters is the persona not the sound. I feel like I step into their body for a minute. It’s actually kind of awesome to do, it’s like casting a movie with all of your favorite A-List actors!

i’m an author and I’ve never made an audiobook, can you help?

Totally. I can can take care of everything from finding a male co-narrator, to uploading the completed files ready for sale. Send me an email and we can discuss how to get started.
